*Woman with a Book* (1932)- Woman with a Book is one of Picasso's most famous portraits of his beloved Marie-Thérèse Walter, balancing sensuality and constraint by enclosing exuberant, thickly applied colour in a network of sinuous black lines. The piece is a tribute to Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, a Neoclassical master of line whose work Picasso admired since he was a child. Picasso tapped into the sexuality hidden beneath Ingres's picture of bourgeois propriety by resting his model's head on her palm and replaced Madame Moitessier's fan with the fluttering pages of a book.
