Soak 1 cup of chana dal in water for 30 minutes.
Drain the water and rinse the dal.
Add the dal to a pot with 3 cups of water.
Add salt and turmeric powder to the pot.
Bring the pot to a boil over high heat.
Once it starts to boil, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot.
Simmer the dal for 30-40 minutes until it is soft and tender.
In a separate pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds, garlic, and onions.
Once the onions are golden brown, add tomatoes and cook until they are soft.
Add the cooked dal to the pan and mix well.
Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
